Chugach State Park
Large state park with extensive outdoor recreation, scenic views, and hiking opportunities in the Anchorage area.
Chugach State Park is a huge Anchorage-area wilderness park where mountains, glaciers, alpine tundra, forests, and lakes come together just outside the city. It is a favorite place for hiking, wildlife viewing, scenic drives, and backcountry outings, with trailheads and viewpoints that can feel surprisingly remote while still being close to town. The park’s size and variety make it one of the best places in Anchorage to experience Alaska’s landscape without a long trip.
History
Chugach State Park was established in 1970 to protect a large stretch of public land along the eastern edge of Anchorage. It is part of the Alaska state park system and was created to preserve recreation access and the natural character of the Chugach Mountains near the city.
