Congress Avenue Bridge Bats
4.5FreeWitness Austin's famous urban bat colony take flight at sunset
The Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge hosts North America's largest urban colony of Mexican free-tailed bats. From spring through early autumn, hundreds of thousands of bats emerge from beneath the structure each evening near dusk to forage. Spectators can watch the spectacle from the bridge's east pedestrian walkway, the grassy banks of Lady Bird Lake, or guided watercraft tours.
History
The bridge was completed in 1980, and over time, it became a roosting site for bats. The population has since grown to become one of the largest urban bat colonies in North America, leading to the development of the annual Bat Fest celebration.
