Thunder Hole
A classic scenic stop with dramatic ocean views and crashing waves, making it a strong outdoor attraction in Bar Harbor.
Thunder Hole is a dramatic coastal inlet in Acadia National Park where waves surge into a narrow rock channel and can produce a deep booming sound and spray, especially when the sea is rough. It’s one of the park’s best-known scenic stops, with easy access from the Park Loop Road and short paths to viewing areas along the granite shoreline. Even on calmer days, the setting is worth a visit for its rugged cliffs, open Atlantic views, and classic Maine coast scenery.
History
Thunder Hole became a popular stop because of the natural shape of the shoreline rather than any built structure: waves entering the narrow channel compress air and water, creating the thunder-like sound that gave the place its name. It has long been one of the most visited viewpoints in Acadia National Park, especially after the park’s coastal roads and overlooks made the area easier for travelers to reach.
Expert notes
- Wear sturdy shoes with good grip; the rocks can be wet and slippery.
- Do not climb onto the rocks near the waterline, even if the surf looks calm.
- If visiting at peak times, expect crowds at the main overlook and limited parking nearby.
