Painted Desert

The Painted Desert does not exist within Phoenix, Arizona, as the famous colorful badlands are located over 200 miles northeast in Northern Arizona. To see the Painted Desert, travel to Petrified Forest National Park off Interstate 40.

History

The Painted Desert has been inhabited for thousands of years, with ancient Native American tribes such as the Puebloan peoples leaving their mark through artifacts and dwellings. The area was designated as a National Park in 1962 to protect its unique geological features and archaeological significance.
