La Brea Tar Pits and Museum is an active urban Ice Age fossil excavation site located in Hancock Park. History

For over tens of thousands of years, the tar pits have preserved the bones of animals that wandered in and got trapped. Excavation of the pits began in the early 20th century, and since then, millions of fossils have been discovered, offering priceless insights into the Ice Age.
