La Brea Tar Pits and Museum is an active urban Ice Age fossil excavation site located in Hancock Park. Visitors can see prehistoric animal skeletons, observe scientists at work in the Fossil Lab, and explore bubbling asphalt seeps throughout the grounds. Note that while the main museum building is currently temporarily closed, the surrounding outdoor park area features visible tar pits and walking paths.
History
For over tens of thousands of years, the tar pits have preserved the bones of animals that wandered in and got trapped. Excavation of the pits began in the early 20th century, and since then, millions of fossils have been discovered, offering priceless insights into the Ice Age.
