Los Angeles River
3.9FreeDiscover the transformed iconic waterway flowing right through Los Angeles.
The Los Angeles River spans 51 miles from the San Fernando Valley through Downtown Los Angeles to Long Beach. Once largely encased in a concrete flood-control channel, portions of the river are undergoing green revitalization with surrounding parkland and multi-use paths. Visitors can bike along paved river trails, observe local wildlife, or kayak along designated recreational sections during warmer months.
History
Originally a wild, free-flowing river, the Los Angeles River was a vital source of water for the region. In the 1930s, after devastating floods, it was channelized with concrete by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to manage its flow and prevent further disaster.
