The Southwest Museum of the American Indian in Mount Washington was historically Los Angeles's first museum, showcasing an extensive collection of Native American art and artifacts. The historic campus has permanently closed to visitors after operations were consolidated under the Autry Museum of the American West. Its vast collections have been relocated and integrated into the primary Autry Museum facilities in Griffith Park.
History
Founded in 1907 by Charles Fletcher Lummis, the Southwest Museum holds the distinction of being the oldest museum in Los Angeles. Its mission has been to preserve and present the art, history, and culture of Native American peoples, primarily those from the southwestern United States.
