Miami Circle National Historic Landmark

Located at the mouth of the Miami River in downtown Miami, the Miami Circle National Historic Landmark is a 2,000-year-old archaeological site associated with the indigenous Tequesta people. Discovered in 1998, this waterfront park preserves a series of posthole carvings in limestone bedrock that mark an ancient structure. Today, visitors can walk through the grassy park, view interpretive signage, and enjoy scenic views of Biscayne Bay.

History

Discovered in 1998 during a construction project, the Miami Circle is thought to date back to around 2,000 years ago. It is one of the few sites in the United States that provides evidence of the presence of the Tequesta tribe, showcasing their sophisticated use of the land and resources.
