Bodie Island Lighthouse

Located in Nags Head within Cape Hatteras National Seashore, the Bodie Island Lighthouse is a historic 156-foot black and white striped beacon. Grounds and surrounding boardwalk paths offer scenic views across surrounding marshlands and freshwater ponds. Visitors can admire the functioning Fresnel lens and explore the maritime history of the Outer Banks.

History

The current Bodie Island Lighthouse was built in 1872, replacing an earlier lighthouse that was constructed in 1847 and was deemed inadequate. It has served as a critical navigation aid for ships entering the Albemarle Sound and remains an important historical landmark in the region.
