History
The Portland Observatory was built in 1807 by Captain Lemuel Moody as a signal tower for the busy port of Portland. From its tower, Moody could use a system of signals to identify incoming ships for merchants and ship owners, making it an important part of the city’s maritime commerce. It is recognized as the only surviving maritime signal tower in the United States.
