Celebrate global folk art, craft, and design in Balboa Park

Located in the historic Plaza de Panama at San Diego's Balboa Park, the Mingei International Museum showcases folk art, craft, and design from all over the world. The museum features an inspiring collection of global artifacts that celebrate everyday human creativity and traditional craftsmanship. Guests can wander through dynamic exhibition galleries or relax in the open-access ground floor commons space.

History

Founded in 1978 by Martha Longenecker, a professor of art at San Diego State University, the Mingei International Museum was born out of her passion for the art of the people (mingei). It has since become a sanctuary for the preservation and celebration of folk art and design, undergoing several transformations and expansions to continue its mission.

Quick tip: Check out the ground-floor commons area for free exhibition displays and dining before heading upstairs to the main ticketed galleries.
