History
Founded by Spanish Franciscan friar Junipero Serra in 1769, Mission San Diego de Alcala has the distinction of being the first Franciscan mission in the Las Californias Province of the Viceroyalty of New Spain. Over its long history, the mission has witnessed significant events, including indigenous resistance, the secularization of the missions in the 19th century, and subsequent restoration efforts to preserve its legacy.
