Located within the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve, Annie's Canyon Trail offers an adventure through a naturally carved sandstone slot canyon. Hikers squeeze through narrow rock walls and climb a steep ladder to reach a scenic viewpoint overlooking the lagoon and Pacific Ocean. Easier alternative paths are available for visitors who prefer to bypass the tightest canyon sections.
History
The trail was named in honor of Annie, a local environmental advocate who played a crucial role in preserving the area. Previously known as 'The Mushroom Caves,' the area had been subject to vandalism and misuse. Thanks to the efforts of Annie and the local community, it was rehabilitated and reopened to the public as Annie's Canyon Trail, offering a safe and awe-inspiring outdoor experience.
