Fort Ross State Historic Park
Historic coastal park with bluff-top views, trails, and preserved Russian-era fort ruins. It combines outdoor scenery with a unique historical setting.
Fort Ross State Historic Park preserves a dramatic stretch of Sonoma Coast scenery along with the remains of a 19th-century Russian settlement. Visitors come for the historic fort area, museum exhibits, and sweeping ocean views, plus easy access to coastal trails and picnic spots. It is a good stop for travelers who want both California history and a rugged shoreline experience in one place.
History
Fort Ross was established in 1812 by the Russian-American Company as a coastal outpost for hunting, farming, and supplying Russia’s far northern colonies. The settlement later changed hands and was eventually abandoned, but the site survives as one of the most important reminders of Russia’s presence in early California. Today the park preserves reconstructed and original elements of the fort area so visitors can better understand that unusual chapter of Pacific Coast history.
Expert notes
- Expect uneven ground and coastal weather; sturdy shoes and a jacket are smart.
- Check current park hours and any guided-tour availability before you go.
- Allow time for the visitor center and historic buildings, not just the overlook.
