Cape Meares

Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint is a dramatic coastal headland located along the Oregon Coast west of Portland. Perched 200 feet above the Pacific Ocean, the park features sweeping ocean vistas, short hiking trails, birdwatching, and the historic 1890s Cape Meares Lighthouse. Visitors can also take a short, paved walk to see the famous Octopus Tree, a giant Sitka spruce with massive sprawling branches.

History

The Cape Meares Lighthouse was built in 1890 and is one of the shortest lighthouses on the Oregon coast. It played a crucial role in guiding ships safely along the rocky coastline until it was decommissioned in 1963.
