The Grotto, officially named The National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother, is a serene 62-acre Catholic shrine carved into a cliffside in Northeast Portland. The lower level is free to visit and features a cliffside cave shrine, chapel, and visitor amenities. Visitors can take an elevator to the upper level to wander through peaceful botanical gardens filled with sculptures and panoramic regional views.

History

Founded in 1924 by the Order of the Servants of Mary, The Grotto was established to honor the Virgin Mary and to create a sacred space for prayer and meditation. It has since developed into a beloved destination for both locals and tourists.
