Natural Bridge

Natural Bridge is one of Bryce Canyon National Park’s most recognizable rock formations: a large, naturally carved arch set into the park’s colorful hoodoo landscape. It’s an easy and rewarding stop because the viewpoint gives you a dramatic look at the scale and layering of Bryce’s sandstone cliffs without requiring a long hike. The contrast between the arch, the surrounding pines, and the orange-red rock makes it especially photogenic in good light.

History

Natural Bridge is a natural sandstone arch formed by erosion, not a man-made structure. Like the rest of Bryce Canyon’s famous formations, it was shaped over long periods as water, frost, and gravity wore away the Claron Formation rock, leaving behind the arch and the surrounding amphitheater landscape.

Expert notes

• Check current park road and viewpoint access conditions before you go, especially in winter or after storms.
• The viewpoint is generally straightforward, but the area can be exposed to sun and wind, so bring water and sun protection.
• If you want photos, aim for side-lighting rather than midday sun to bring out the arch’s texture and color.
