Historic City Market

Spanning four historic blocks in downtown Charleston, the Historic City Market has served as a vibrant commercial hub for over 200 years. Visitors can browse open-air sheds and enclosed halls filled with regional art, souvenirs, gourmet food items, and traditional Gullah sweetgrass baskets. The market remains open daily year-round, featuring active daytime vendors as well as weekend night markets.

• The Historic City Market is one of the most fascinating and unique places in Charleston. Visitors should not forget to bring cash, as many of the vendors may not accept credit cards. A must-do activity at the market is to sample some of the delicious Lowcountry cuisine, such as shrimp and grits or she-crab soup. The ideal time to visit is in the morning when the market is less crowded, and the ideal months to visit are March to May and September to November when the weather is mild. Wear comfortable shoes, as the market covers a large area and requires a lot of walking. The market can be very crowded during peak tourist season (June-August).
