Mount Rushmore

History

The idea for Mount Rushmore was proposed by South Dakota state historian Doane Robinson in 1923, and the carving began in 1927 under the direction of sculptor Gutzon Borglum. The project was completed in 1941, symbolizing the birth, growth, development, and preservation of the United States.
