The Wave Organ
4.2$· InexpensiveAn acoustic waterfront sculpture transforming San Francisco Bay waves into music
Tucked away on a jetty in the Marina District, The Wave Organ is an acoustic waterfront sculpture designed by the Exploratorium. Constructed using carved granite and marble reclaimed from a demolished cemetery, the installation features 25 pipes reaching into San Francisco Bay. As tides rise and fall, incoming waves force water and air through the pipes to create subtle, ambient sounds. The site also features carved stone seating with scenic views of Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge.
Expert notes
- The Wave Organ is surrounded by stunning views of the San Francisco skyline and the Golden Gate Bridge. It encompasses 25 organ pipes made of PVC and concrete located at various elevations within site, allowing for the rise and fall of the tides. The impact of waves against the pipe ends and the subsequent movement of the water in and out of the pipes creates a subtle sound. It requires visitors to become sensitized to music from the wave organ and, simultaneously, to the environment's music.
