Chinatown in San Francisco is one of the oldest Chinatowns in North America and the largest outside of Asia. Established in 1848, Chinatown was rebuilt entirely in the Chinese style after the 1906 earthquake, and it became even more attractive than before the disaster. Chinatown is a bustling “city within a city.” and the most densely populated area of San Francisco, with a lot to see and do.

Take plenty of photos, sample some authentic Chinese food, and enjoy the bright, colorful streets filled with Chinese architecture and culture.

  • Picturesque Grant Avenue is the main street in Chinatown; visitors start their visit from the famous Dragon's gate at Bush Street and Grant Ave intersection to Columbus Street.
  • There are many things to do and see, including restaurants, temples, theaters, workshops, stores, antique and souvenir shops, jewelry, teahouses, street art, colorful architecture, traditional pharmacies, tours, and more.
  • Stockton street runs parallel to Grant, and that is where most of the locals go shopping for produce.
  • Famous places to check out are Old St. Mary's Church, Old Telephone Exchange, Portsmouth Square, The Transamerica Pyramid Redwood Grove, Golden Gate fortune cookie factory, and The oldest Tin How Chines Temple.
  • If you are traveling through San Francisco during an important Chinese holiday or event, you can expect to see an elaborate celebration. Chinese New Year celebrations are often considered the best in North America. The main street in Chinatown for tourists is Grant Avenue, with the Chinatown Gateway at Grant Avenue and Bush Street.
  • Vising the Chinatown side alleys, including Waverly Place, Hang Ah Street, and Spofford Alley, are equally exciting with their authentic look and culture.
